What we need in order to be declared right with God (saved) is His righteousness (that is, the right things Christ did in His life, death and resurrection). This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.(Rom 3:22) Through Him everyone who believes is justified from [declared innocent of] everything. (Acts 13:39)

If you repent and put your trust in Jesus as your Lord (Master) and Saviour, He becomes your representative. That means that everything He did to save you, He did on your behalf and in your place. When you repent and put your trust in Him alone:

1. You instantly have credited to your account His life score of 100/100 as if you had scored it yourself, allowing you to enter heaven, not because of your worthiness but because of His: because by one sacrifice He has made perfect forever those who are being made holy [that is, believers].(Heb 10:14)

2. You will never be judged or punished for your sins because you can't be judged or punished twice for the same crime, and Jesus has already been judged and punished for all your crimes (past, present and future sins). There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Rom 8:1) and they shall not come into judgment.(John 5:24)

3. You have complete forgiveness. He forgave us all our sins. (Col 2:13) To the God who sees all sins, "all" means past, present and future sins. God also erases them from His book so there is no record of them. I will forgive them their wickedness and will remember their sins no more." (Heb 8:12)

4. You have eternal life and shall never perish (Jn 1:12) - a promise made by Jesus Christ Himself.

5. God's awesome and infinitely powerful Spirit-whom those who believed in Him were later to receive (Jn 7:39) - comes to live in you, giving you love, joy, peace and unlimited power to live in a way that honours and pleases Him.

That does not mean you'll have no more problems or that you'll be happy every second. More importantly, it means that through Jesus' perfect obedience (scoring 100/100) to God's law, His sacrificial death (payment for all your sins) and His glorious resurrection:

You may confidently approach God (Eph 3:12)
You are declared right with God (Rom 5:1)

You have peace with God (Rom 5:1)

Now He has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in His sight, without blemish and free from accusation. (Col 1:22)

To all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.(Jn 1:12) You are now a new creation.(2 Cor 5:17)

This spiritual rebirth, like your physical birth, is all of God's doing - something you could not possibly work for or earn. perfect example of this is that in the same way that I had to be born of the flesh (from my parents) to be able to bear my parents name, if I want to be called a Christian (bear Christ's name), I must be born of Christ's Spirit.
